Due to increased human population, managing natural disturbances (PDF) within the Blanco River Basin has affected wildlife habitat structure. Fire suppression has changed the habitats of two endangered birds, The Black-capped Vireo and the Golden Cheeked Warbler.

Natural fires assure creation of appropriate habitat for The Black-capped Vireo populations.  Until recently, appropriate Golden Cheeked Warbler habitat was confined to steep canyon slopes because they provide greater protection against the effects of range fires.
